Dave Shapiro, Groundbreaking Music Executive, Dies in San Diego Plane Crash at 42

The music industry is mourning the loss of Dave Shapiro, a pioneering talent agent and co-founder of Sound Talent Group, who tragically died in a plane crash near San Diego on May 22, 2025. He was 42. Shapiro was piloting his private Cessna Citation II jet when it crashed into the Murphy Canyon neighborhood during foggy conditions, killing all six people on board, including former The Devil Wears Prada drummer Daniel Williams and two other employees of Sound Talent Group. Dave Shapiro began his career as a drummer and tour manager before transitioning into talent representation. He quickly rose through the ranks at The Agency Group and later United Talent Agency, where he represented a diverse roster of artists including A Day To Remember, Pierce The Veil, and Sleeping With Sirens. In 2018, he co-founded Sound Talent Group, an agency that became a powerhouse in the rock and alternative scenes, representing acts like Sum 41, Parkway Drive, and Lamb of God. Shapiro was also instrumental in supporting independent artists. He co-founded the National Independent Talent Organization in 2020 to advocate for the needs of independent music professionals. Beyond his music career, Shapiro was an experienced pilot and aviation enthusiast. He founded Velocity Aviation and owned the Cessna Citation II involved in the crash. The Tragic Accident

The ill-fated flight departed from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey with a scheduled stop in Wichita, Kansas, before heading to San Diego. As the plane approached Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport in dense fog around 3:30 AM local time, it crashed into a residential area, igniting fires that damaged at least ten homes and numerous vehicles. Over 100 residents were evacuated, and two people on the ground sustained minor injuries.
